How to add a page to a PDF: blank, from a file or a photo
The PDF editor adds pages in three ways: a blank sheet of the size you need, chosen pages from another PDF, and an image turned into a page. The insertion point is set relative to the selected page, and the order can be changed afterwards by dragging. Every added page lives in the document as a separate copy, so edits on it never touch the original. When whole files need to go in without any sorting, the separate page insertion tool is quicker.
A contract needs an approval sheet, an application needs a blank page at the end for a signature, and a report is missing one page in the middle that arrived as a separate scan. PDF viewers cannot help here: they show pages but do not add them. Tasks like these need an editor.
The browser-based Edit PDF tool has an add-pages dialog with three tabs: a blank page, pages from another PDF, and an image. This guide covers how each works, where the new page lands, what export does to the document, and when the separate whole-file tool is the better choice.
Two methods and how they differ
The site has two tools for adding pages; which one to use depends on how much material you have and how precisely it must be placed.
The editor works at page level. You see the whole document, pick the spot, add a blank sheet or part of another file, move pages around, rotate them, exclude the ones you do not need, edit text on the added sheets, and only then export the result. It is the method for precise work: one or two pages in exactly the right place, checked on screen.
The Insert pages tool works at file level: it takes the main document and inserts additional files whole at the position you name, with no sorting inside them. That is faster when you need to add a thirty-sheet appendix or assemble a document from ready-made parts. How it takes the position and what it does with orientation and bookmarks is covered in the article on inserting pages into a finished PDF.
The rest is about the editor.
Blank page: size, orientation, position
Open the document in the editor, select in the "Pages" panel the page next to which you want the new sheet, and click "Insert pages". The first tab of the dialog is called "Blank page".
The default size is "Same as the selected page": the new sheet repeats its neighbour's dimensions and will not stand out in a document of non-standard format. The A4 and Letter options give a standard sheet, and for those you can choose the orientation, "Portrait" or "Landscape". The "Custom" option takes a width and a height in millimetres, anywhere from 1 to 5000 mm, enough for a business card or a drawing sheet.
The "Where" switch sets the position: "Before the selected page" or "After the selected page". If you need a sheet at the very end, select the last page and insert after it.
The inserted blank page appears in the panel straight away, and the rest of the editor's tools work on it. Click "Add text" to write the heading of an approval sheet, "Add signature" for a signature, "Add image" for a stamp or a logo. At export it becomes an ordinary page with text and graphics, not a picture.
Pages from another PDF
The second tab, "From a PDF", adds pages from another file to the document, and not necessarily all of them.
Choose the file. The editor reads it in the browser and shows a list of its pages with previews. Tick the ones you need, one or several, or click "Select all". The counter under the list shows how many pages are ticked. Then choose the position, before or after the selected page, and click "Insert". The ticked pages land together at that spot, in their source order.
The added file is uploaded to the server before the document changes: if the upload fails, the editor says so and the document stays as it was. That is why a short pause follows choosing a file. While the document itself is still uploading, the dialog asks you to wait.
There are limits on the number of added files and on their total size; when you reach one, the dialog says so plainly rather than stopping halfway. The same file added twice counts once.
A file with an open password cannot be read by the editor, which asks you to remove the password first with Unlock PDF. A file that only restricts printing or copying is added without question.
Every inserted page becomes an independent copy inside the document. If you later correct text on it or hide a fragment, the source file and other copies of the same page stay unchanged.
A photo or scan as a page
The third tab, "From an image", turns a picture into a page and inserts it in the same way as the others. It is how you add a photo of a signed sheet, a snapshot of a certificate or a scan of a stamp to a contract.
The image becomes a one-page PDF right in the browser and from then on behaves like an added PDF file. The rotation recorded by the camera is applied, so a phone photo lands the right way up rather than on its side. Proportions are kept, and so is PNG transparency.
The page size comes in three options. A4 and Letter give a standard sheet, and the default orientation follows the shape of the picture: a vertical photo gets a portrait page, a horizontal one a landscape page. "Match the image" makes a page with the proportions of the picture itself, with the long side equal to the long side of A4. The "Margin, mm" field adds a gap from the edges; by default it is zero.
If there are many photos and they should become a separate document rather than pages inside an existing one, it is quicker to assemble them in JPG to PDF and then add the finished file through the "From a PDF" tab.
A copy of an existing page
Next to the insert button is "Duplicate page". It puts a copy of the selected page right after it. That is handy for forms that need filling in several times and for spreads where the same diagram repeats.
The copy is independent: you can fill in fields or add text on each one separately. If the page has form fields, the copy's fields get different internal names so they do not merge with the original's; so a value typed into the copy will not appear on the first page.
Order, rotation and unwanted pages
All added pages go into the "Pages" panel together with the original ones, and that is where their order changes. A page can be dragged to a new spot or shifted with the "Move page up" and "Move page down" buttons. The "Rotate 90°" button turns a page, which is useful for a landscape scan inside a portrait document.
If you inserted something by mistake, the "Exclude page" button takes it out. The page stays in the panel with a mark and will not go into the export, and "Restore page" brings it back. You can change your mind without starting over.
All of these changes, like the insertion itself, are applied to the document only at export. Until you click "Apply changes" the source file does not change, and any action is reversed with "Undo".
What happens at export
After "Apply changes" the editor assembles the final file on the server. Pages you did not edit are carried over as they are, with their text layer, links and form fields. Added pages take their places as full pages of the document.
The source document's bookmarks are kept and recalculated: a section that was on page ten and moved to page twelve after the insertion still opens from its bookmark. The added file's bookmarks are not carried over: they described a different document.
Page numbers printed on the pages do not change; they are just text on the sheet. If the document needs continuous numbering, stamp it again after assembly with Add page numbers. The document's internal links, from a table of contents for instance, still lead to the same pages as before.
Four typical tasks
Replace a page. The other party has sent a corrected third page as a separate file. Select the old third page in the panel, insert the new one after it through "From a PDF", then exclude the old one. In the export the new page takes its place and the other pages do not shift.
Add an approval or signature sheet. Select the last page, insert a blank sheet of the same size after it, click "Add text" and write the header: who approves, the date, the job title. The signature goes on the same sheet with the signature tool, and if it will be signed on paper, the sheet stays blank for printing.
Divide a document into parts within one file. Between the sections of a collection, insert blank pages with section headings: select the last page of a section, add a blank sheet after it and label it.
Put on a title page. Select the first page and insert before it: a blank sheet if the title will be typed in the editor, or a page from a finished file if it is already laid out. A cover photo goes in through "From an image" at A4 with zero margins.
How to check the result
Open the downloaded file and go through the three places where an insertion most often ends up in the wrong place.
The joins. Page through the page before the insertion, the inserted sheets and the page after. If the new page landed on the wrong side, go back to the editor: the draft of your edits is saved, and moving a page is faster than starting again.
Size and orientation. An inserted page of a different format is visible in the viewer at once: it is narrower or wider than its neighbours. That is fine if intended, but for a document going to print it is better to use "Same as the selected page" or rotate the sheet.
Bookmarks and contents. Open the bookmarks panel and click any bookmark near the end of the document: it should open the old section, not a page displaced by the insertion. Check a printed table of contents by eye: the numbers in it are not recalculated.
What insertion does not do by itself
A blank page is genuinely blank. Headers, footers, frames and backgrounds from neighbouring pages are not copied onto it: if the document is laid out with a header on every sheet, the header has to be added to the new sheet as text, or you insert a copy of a neighbouring page instead of a blank one and hide what is not needed.
An inserted scan stays a picture. Document search will not see it until the text is recognised; if that matters, recognise the page after inserting it, the "Recognise text (OCR)" button is in the same editor.
Numbering is not recalculated, neither the printed numbers nor the table of contents, as described above. Links inside the document and bookmarks, on the other hand, keep leading where they led before.
The file size is the sum of its parts. A blank sheet adds almost nothing, while a page from a scan or a photo weighs as much as it would as a separate file. If the result is too heavy to send, compress it after assembly, not the sources before it.
If you closed the tab before finishing
The editor keeps a draft of your edits in the browser. The next time you open the same file, it offers to continue from where you stopped. If the draft contained pages from other files, the editor asks you to choose those files again: the files themselves are not stored in the browser, only a record of which pages were taken from them. Choose the same files and the draft is restored in full.
Step by step
1. Open Edit PDF and upload the document. If it has an open password, remove the password first. 2. In the "Pages" panel, select the page next to which you need the new one and click "Insert pages". 3. Choose a tab: "Blank page", "From a PDF" or "From an image", set the parameters and the position, and click "Insert". 4. Check the order in the panel; drag pages, rotate them or exclude the extras if needed. Add text or a signature to a blank sheet. 5. Click "Apply changes", download the result and page through all of it: the joins between old and new pages, the bookmarks, the numbering.
When the file insertion tool is more convenient
The editor wins when there are few pages and their position matters. In three cases Insert pages is faster.
When a large file is added whole: an appendix of dozens of sheets, a contractor's report, a reference section. There is no need to take it apart page by page; naming the position is enough.
When a document is assembled from ready-made parts to the same pattern: cover, main text, appendices. That is one operation with several files rather than a series of insertions.
When you only need to add, without editing anything. There is no need to check the result on screen, and the separate tool does it in one step.
In every other case, especially when the new page has to be blank, rotated or made from a photo, the editor remains the only way.
Can I add a blank page to a PDF?
Yes. In the editor click "Insert pages", choose the "Blank page" tab, the size and the position. By default the new sheet repeats the size of the selected page, but you can take A4 or Letter or set a width and a height in millimetres. Once inserted, the sheet accepts text, a signature or an image.
How do I insert only a few pages of a file rather than all of it?
On the "From a PDF" tab choose the file, tick the pages you need in the list with previews and click "Insert". The ticked pages land before or after the selected page. If you need the whole file, there is a "Select all" button.
Where will the new page land?
Relative to the page selected in the side panel: before it or after it, that is the "Where" switch in the dialog. If the spot turns out to be wrong, the page can be dragged in the "Pages" panel or shifted with the up and down buttons; the order is applied at export.
What happens to bookmarks and numbering after an insertion?
The source document's bookmarks are kept and point to the same pages even if their numbers have shifted. The added file's bookmarks are not carried over. Numbers printed on the pages do not change: they are just text, and if needed the numbering is stamped again with a separate tool.
The added file is password-protected. What do I do?
The editor does not read files with an open password and says so when you choose one. Remove the password first in the unlock tool, then add the opened file. Protection that only forbids printing or copying does not get in the way.
Do I need an account?
No. The basic workflow is available without creating an account.
How long are files stored?
Files are used only for the selected operation, kept for a limited time and deleted automatically. We do not use uploaded documents to train AI models.
